SONG LYRICS
The Family Album — It's Good to get Together

Pickin' Berries

Pickin' berries with my baby on a Sunday afternoon
We're gonna make us a berry cobbler while sing us a berry tune
We're gonna serve it up in a big bowl with some ice cream and a spoon
Pickin' beriies with my baby on a Sunday afternoon
We have to watch for the stickers by each berry that we pull
But we know that it'll be worth it once I get our bellies full
Pickin'
berries with my baby on a Sunday afternoon
Cause once they're gone they won't be back around until next June
Pickin' berries with my baby in the good old summertime
We're gonna fill up both of our buckets while we play us a berry rhyme
We're gonna pour on some cream and sugar and eat 'em fresh right off the vine
Pickin' berries with my baby in the good old summertime

Mary Ann

Sitting in the kitchen with Mary Ann
Talking 'bout our lives she's a very good friend
Sitting reminiscing ëbout the things we've done
We've both had our hard times that's one thing we know
Ups and downs of living 50 years or more
As we sit and ponder where did we go wrong
Sitting in the kitchen singing the same old song
And they say hindsight is 20 20
Back seat drivers they think they know it all
Broken hearts fall by dozens Like rain from the sky you can watch them as they fall
Talked about the loves that we have won and lost
They're were many times we got our wires all crossed
There's no easy answer for the years gone by
Hash it over once we hash it over twice
Lay out all our options and some good advice
Swollow up our pride give it one more try
Sitting in the kitchen have a good old cry

Debbie, Rhonda and Gloria

When I was a young girl oh so long ago
These memories I recall Laughing and playing with my three best friends
Or sitting doing nothing at all I remember.
I think back and the memories come
And there's nothing no nothing that I'd trade 'em
for Debbie, Rhonda and Gloria
Tea parties with cup cakes and alphabet soup
We spelled out the words we knew
While the record was telling of tickety tock
And all that she'd been through
The years they go by and the changes they come
And we've all gone our separate ways
But I still remember the fun that we had
Way back in the good old days

A Penny For Your Thoughts

A penny for your thoughts my friend what's on your mind today
Is there something I can do to chase your blues away
Cause you look kind of sad my friend and life is hard it's true
A penny for your thoughts my friend because I care for you
When you find that troubles are a knocking at your door
Just remember you can count on me
I will not forsake you and I'll be right by your side
That's the way a friend should always be
Let's stay together you and me
A penny for your thoughts my friend
Let's sit and chat a spell
And reminisce about the times before these troubles fell
And you can count on me my friend intentions from the heart
And everyday I think of you and I have right from the start

Fishin'

I dropped my pole down in the water
Hopin' I might get a bite
Cause my mama told me that I oughta
Bring a mess home for tonight
And I said mama, mama donít you worry
Iíve got some big ol' worms for bait
And I'll catch a mess of fish for supper
And I'll be home before too late
The fish were a bitin' and a jumpin'
And I pulled 'em in for quite a spell
Mama's gonna think I'm somethin'
Cause I must have caught 'bout 10 or 12
Walking back I passed a neighbor
Admiring the string of fish I brought
She ask if I might do a favor
And share some of the fish I caught
And I said neighbor, neighbor don't you worry
There's plenty here for everyone
I'll give you 'nough to have for supper
Then I had better hurry home
I told my mama all about it
She said that what I did was fine
There's plenty here no doubt about it
You better wash its suppertime
She said you better wash its suppertime

COME NEXT SPRING

THE YEAR WAS 33 WITH 8 HUNGRY MOUTHS TO FEED
AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION BARING DOWN ON OUR EMPTY HARVEST FIELDS
MAMA DID ALL THAT SHE KNEW
TO TRY TO GET US THROUGH
WHILE DADDY WORKED FROM DAWN TIL DUSK ON THE GROUND WHERE THE CROPS ONCE GREW

BUT COME NEXT SPRING THE CROPS WILL ALL COME IN
WE'LL HAVE PLENTY THEN
AND THEY'LL BE JOY AND LAUGHTER
COME NEXT SPRING
I KNOW THERE WILL
COME NEXT SPRING THERE REALLY WILL
COME NEXT SPRING

THE YEAR WAS 34 THE HAVEST YIELD WAS POOR
ANOTHER SUMMER'S COME AND GONE WITH OUR CUBBARDS BARE ONCE MORE
WITH 8 HUNGRY MOUTHS TO FEED
MAMA TRIED TO MAKE ENDS MEET
WHILE DADDY WORKED THE BARREN FIELDS WITH HIS LAST OUNCE OF STRENGTH

Blow Out The Candles

Tell me once tell me twice that you love me
And I'll believe every word that you say
Though it's against my own better judgment
A contradiction either way
Cause there ain't no one ever gonna change you
And I've known all along it was true
And I am drowning in the misconception
That I'd hold on to you
Make a wish blow out the candles
Rub Aladdin's lamp for luck
Drop a penny in the fountain
I guess I'm just a sitting duck!

Sister Song

When I was just a little girl I never understood
Why you wouldn’t play with me like other sisters would
Now that I’m much older
I finally understand
It’s just the years that we spanned

When will I see you again
Too much time passes in between
When will I see you again
You mean more to me now than you did then

Whenever I feel lonely whenever I feel blue
Whenever I need someone I always think of you
You’ve always been there for me through good times and the bad
You’re my sister and finest friend I’ve ever had

So let’s stay together now
Cause too many years have passed
It seems we always put our sister love last
Now it seems the tide had turned
And there might be time for us
A sister is a special gift from above

Max's Song
03/19/01

Good Morning my friends let me tell you
This new life has filled us with joy
And the miracle here is so very dear
For this beautiful sweet baby boy
I know there's heartache and troubles
With pain and strife all around But this
Old World keeps a spinning
And miracles still abound
The sun is shining this morning
The sky is bluer than blue The flowers reach up toward heaven
And miracles still come true

To Dara, Ian and Max

A Cowgirl's Love Song

See that cowgirl over there
The one with the golden hair
She is looking mighty fine to me
And I'd like to take her out
Riding on my pony Scout
As I yodel out a lovers melody
Headin' west away we ride across the hills and dales
Hollerin' out a big "Yahoo" and a singing happy trails
Ropin', Ridin' that's for me
Boots and spurs my finery
As we saddle up and push those doggies through
And tonight beside the fire
Sing and play my old guitar
As we yodel le he yodel le he hoo

Daddy's Angry Eyes

Mama looked up at me from the dinner table
She had fear on her face that I recognized
Could it be another night filled with trouble
Another night of Daddy's angry eyes

And I said mama don't you worry
I'll protect you and keep you safe somehow
We've been through this so many times before
And I think I've learned my lessons by now

We washed all the dishes after supper
While daddy drank and watched the nightly news
Then we scurried off to find a place of safety
And prayed that daddy wouldn't come for you

Then we heard daddy's foot steps getting closer
And I knew just what trouble there would
So I stood up in front of my mama
Cause if you want to get to her you'll have to go through me

It's Good To Get Together

It's good to get together now and then
And visit with our family and friends
Talk about the good old days and remember way back then
Yes it's good to get together now and then
I remember mama with Maudie at her side
Sisters close together until my mama died
Nadine and Maggie Bea those two were just the same
It's so good to see them together once again
When I saw Shem a smiling with her children oh so near
I had to step outside so I could wipe away my tears
And big brother Clinton with Vivian his wife
He always had to be so strong big brother all his life
And Easter Bell was sorely missed we pray sheíll come again
Cause it's good to get together now and then
"I remember our plowed fields and where the syrup mill used to stand
And stopping by the shady brook to feed some sugar to old Dan
And when the evening shadows fell amongst those whispering pines
We could always hear our mother call
Come home it's supper time"
Gone but not forgotten Flora Mae and Ardie
They're up with Bud and Jessie and they're waiting patiently
And as the years keep rolling by we'll soon see them again
Cause it's good to get together now and then

Friends

What would I do without friends
They stick with you to the end
And they won't break your heart, leave you or hurt you On this you can depend
What would I do without friends
They reach out a helping hand
And I couldn't make it at all without the help of my true friends
Life sure ain't easy for this old country gal
I made some real big changes and left my hone down south
I wanted to play music for the rest of my life
People thought I'd gone crazy but I just had to try
I loaded up my suitcase and headed way out west
Left my home and family and all of the rest I was scared and loney wondering were they right
These mid life crazies messing up my life
Now I'm up in Frisco playing all my songs
They still think Iím crazy back in my Texas home
But my friends all love my and they understand
I'm a way out mama with a country band

The Story of My Mamas Prayers

We all love our mamas, don't we?
Mamas are very special.
Well, I want to tell you a story about my mama

She was the greatest person I've ever known and I sure was blessed to have her for a mother.
She really had a hard life filled with lots of pain and strife and never received much praise or glory in this old life

I guess the hard times made her meek and humble but yet she was also the strongest and bravest person I've ever known. She had the faith of Job and was such a praying woman. We called her a "prayer warrior" and used to tease her about her "hotline to heaven".

Her faith and prayers kept her going and kept us going as well and she had such a sweet nature considering the turmoil that she faced every day of her life. In spite of it all, she love to laugh and have a good time and she always had a ready smile for anyone that might come her way. I loved my mother very much and I also liked her a whole lot and she was my very best friend.

Now I grew up out in the country in an old farm house with hard wood floors and every night as I'd be falling asleep my mama would be in the living room sitting in her rocking chair rocking back and forth on those old hardwood floors and as she rocked the floor would squeak and she'd pat her little foot and make a nice rhythm. Then she would begin her nightly ritual of praying outloud and that is how I would fall asleep every night, listening to her rock and pray and pat her little foot and I want you to know she made some mighty sweet music as she called out the names of every one she knew, well, I bet she prayed for each and every one of you! My mama has gone on up to heaven now but I know she's looking down on us and listening as I tell her story and sing this song just special for her. The second and third verses of this song are the actual words my mama used to pray so long ago and I remember them very well and I sing this song and tell this story every time I perform and it has never failed to bring comfort and joy to my heart and soul. So this is not a sad song but a celebration of the life of Sister Flora Mae Frentress Hosch and if you want to sing a long, clap your hands or stomp your feet, please feel free to do so because that is what this song is all about.

I Don't Worry

I don't worry like I used too
Life has taught me how to let things go
And it took me 50 years of living
To learn just how much I don't know
And the sun still comes up every morning
And the moon does the same every night
And the rain must fall to make us grow
More than that I don't really know
And I don't love you like I used too
And I wonder if time will heal my wounds
But I still stop and think about you
And why you had to go away so soon
No I don't worry like I use too
Life has taught me how to let things go
But it took a broken heart to listen
And learn just how much that I don't know

Texas - The Kountry Kays

Movin' On

Heading up from Houston pass through San Antone
Nothings gonna stop me now till I get home
Iím a moving, Iím a moving on

Rolling down the highway I see El Paso
Before the sun goes down it'll be New Mexico I'm a moving, I'm a moving on
Highway stripes keep count how many more
Thousand miles down and a thousand miles to go
Keep on driving till the pain is gone
Those rolling wheels theyíll take us home

From New Mexico we're traveling due west
We'll be in the desert when we start to sweat
I'm a moving, I'm a moving on

Arizona cactus wave to us bye bye
Cross the Colorado makes me want to cry
I'm a moving, I'm a moving on

California looks mighty good to me
But we got a ways to go before we reach our destiny
Pay no attention to that old speed zone
Just keep those wheels moving on

Up to Disneyland we drive on through L.A.
If we keep a going weíll be home today
Iím a moving, I'm a moving on

Keep those wheels a rolling and forget what was
I see yellow bricks and they all lead to Oz
I'm a moving, I'm a moving on

Cross the Bay Bridge what a lovely sight to see
Frisco's face is smiling back at me
Its been along journey but the day is done
Those rolling wheels they brought us home

It's A Natural Fact

(Weird Song)

We'll it was cold, dark and lonely
The road to my childhood home
And I walked six miles to school in the snow every morn
My shoes were made from old tires that were wrapped around my feet
For lunch cold biscuits and gravy in my bucket for me to eat
It's a natural fact
My clothes were made from an old tow sack
We lived in a little old run down shack
And we were up each morning 'fore the crack of dawn
It's plain to see
We were just as poor as poor could be
We worked in the fields from sun up until sun down
Mama was cooking in kitchen as we plowed and plant the ground
Our hands were hard and callused and we were blinded by the heat
But that's the way it had to be if we wanted to make ends meet
It's a natural fact
Well, my daddy never cut no slack
I hopped a freight on the railroad track
And I ain't never ever looking back
It's plain to see
This was not the kind of life for me
I made my way to Houston got a job down at the docks
Worked hard everyday loading boats and punching clocks
When pay came around I stepped up to stake my claim
I didn't even get enough to make till pay day came again
Itís a natural fact
Well, I worked so hard that it'd break your back
The days so long that I lost track
And the pusher man he sure don't cut no slack
It's plain to see
Well, there ain't no one I'm running from but me
It was cold, dark and lonely the road to my childhood home

License To Drive

I've got a license to drive and I'm driving her crazy
Running red lights and stop signs from lane to lane The PD is after me and I don't mean maybe
Iíve got a license to drive and I'm driving my baby insane

We left out of Texas 2 or 3 years ago
My license expired here in Californ ni-o
She never like my driving, it caused her too much stress
But I got a big surprise down at the CDPS

My baby likes to have a little drink or two
I'm the designated driver that's the right thing to do
The way I weave and swerve I really push my luck
Some times it's hard to tell which one of us is drunk

In This Town

Sometimes I sit and wonder
As I hear the rolling thunder
Is somebody walking in my shoes?

Then I hear the clitter, clatter
And all of the useless chatter
Sometimes it makes me want to sing the blues

Then I stop
And look around
At the love I have found
In this town

Sometimes I sit and ponder
As I look way over yonder
If the grass is really greener there

Then I hear the voice of others
Telling me about their druthers
Then I remember I donít really care
Cause I stop
And look around
At the love I have found
In this town

Then I stop
And look around
At the love I have found
In this town

Tornado Alley

Those old twisters blow hard down in Texas
They can ruin you in the blink of an eye
When the sky turns green and you hear a freight train
You can turn around and kiss your ass good-bye

Lookie yonder in the sky there's a dozen coming
They dart around for everyone to see
You better batten down the hatches,
They'll take everything you got
Tornado ally is a terrible place to be

Lord have mercy on my soul
I got a big twister knocking at my door
Bearing down and moving fast
Took my old pickup and the back yard grass
Blew out the window ripped off the roof
Lord this twister won't let me loose
With this hail a beating on my head I'm lucky I ain't dead

Tornado alley no place to be
Tornado alley full of misery
Well I'm gonna hook up to my mobile home
If another twister comes lordy Iíll be gone
Tornado alley seen the last of me

Lordy, Lordy here it comes again
It took all the pigs out of the pig pin
Took the barn but it left the hay
Blew my neighbors house clean away
Now it's headed right to my door
Lordy, lordy can't take no more
With this twister breathing down my neck
I'm a nervous wreck

Well, I'm headin' north on 59
I want to leave his old tornado behind
We'll it's nipping fast at my heels
My mobile home's coming off it's wheels
Well it's swaying left, swaying right
Looks like my mobile home is taking flight
It's plain for me to see
This old twister won't let me be

Cat O' 9 Tails

Mama's Prayers

Those Old Hardwood Floors and her rocking chair
Laid down the rhythm for my mama's prayers
And she made sweet music calling names so dear
Drifting off to sleep that the last thing I would hear
I was just a child the first time I heard
The sweetest sound of my mama's words
Crying out to heaven for the one's she loves
Sending out her prayers on the wings of a dove

She prayed, please forgive me for sins today
And don't let temptation make me go astray
Keep your hand upon me and guide me through
So when I'm dead and gone I'll be up in heaven with you
She said thank you so much for all you've done
And keep my family safe she named us one by one
And friends and family from way back when
The list was so long I'd fall asleep before she reached the end
Many years have passed and my mama's gone
And I have a daughter of my very own
Sometimes late at night I know it must be true
I hear my mama rocking and a praying for me and you

Ricky

Well I guess everyone remembers their first love
No matter how old we get it's something that we always think of
The year for me was 1966
I feel in love when I got my first kiss

Ricky you were every cowgirls dream and
I feel in love with you at 16
Blonde hair blue eyes and those skin tight Wrangler jeans
Iíll never forget how we talked and laughed
You're wing tip boots and that cowboy hat
Ricky you're the finest boy I'd ever seen

You wore my ring and I wore yours
We were both in love that's one thing we knew for sure
You took me to the prom and we walked barefoot in the sand
And we swore that our love would never end

It's been so long since I've seen you
And I guess we both lost the love we thought was true
But I often think about you even though we're far apart
And I will always love you deep within my heart

Smokin'

We'll I'm popping pills and toking weed
And I got everything I need
I won't stop in my Ford Econoline
But if I do it's just for gas
Fill her up and throw out the trash
If I keep a moving I won't get behind

Smoking
Got no time to waste
Smoking
Stepping up the pace
Smoking
Got to make it home on time
Smoking
Hitting 95 / Hitting 98
Smoking
I just love to drive / She's got what it takes
Smoking
This old Ford Econoline

Over hill and over dale
Listen to that engine wail
In my vintage 1960 Ford
She's the fastest I have found
Watch me put that hammer down
They don't make 'em like this anymore

I'm a rolling down the interstate
My gauge is topping 98
When I see those lights a flashing from behind
But nothings gonna stop me now
I'm a gonna make it home somehow
I'm a counting on my Ford Econoline

A Drink Away

The smoke in this old barroom makes me crazy
With the lights down low I can hardly see
It's been so long since I've been honky tonkin'
But I'm lonesome and I miss my family
So I came out here tonight to drown my sorrows
And have myself a drink or two or three
And maybe I can find someone to talk to
And fill this emptiness inside of me

Drink number one~
Hi, How you doing? Have I met you before?
Drink number two~
No, I'm not married, I just got divorced
Drink number three~
I don't have any plans. What would you like to do?
I'm just a drink away from saying I love you

For so long I stayed at home a cryin'
Thinking 'bout the life that used to be
But lately Iíve been gettin' kind of restless
And I'd like to have a little company
So I got all gussied up to go out dancin'
And have some fun just like I used to do
I'll have myself a drink and take my chances
So I won't have to think of me and you

Ain’t Nobody’s Baby But Mine

You want to have your cake and eat it too
While I’m a sitting home a feeling blue
You run around every night
When you come home your always tight
I don’t know just what to do with you
Well, I got a thing or two to say my friend
You got your candle burning at both ends
It’s time for you to tow the line
You better be home at supper time
Cause you ain’t nobody’s baby but mine
I told you baby when we tied the knot
This temper that I have is pretty hot
You just smiled and took my hand
Said you’d always be my man
A love like ours could bot be sold or bought
Now after work you have a drink and linger
Don’t forget about that ring upon your finger
It’s time for you to tow the line
You better be home at supper time
Cause you ain’t nobody’s baby but mine

Honky Tonkin'

Honky tonkin's the life for me
There ain't no place that I would rather be
Pass around the jug my friend
I hope this night will never end
Honky tonkin's my destiny

Honky tonkin's lots of fun
It'll help you loose your inhibitions
Grab your partner hit the floor
Dance a jig and then drink some more
Honky tonkin' till we get done

Me and you and all our friends
We like to hang out here
For breakfast we'll have pickled eggs
And wash it down with beer

Honky tonkers are my best friends
I guess Iíll honky tonk until the end
I like those blinking neon lights
This smoke filled bar is out of sight
Honky tonkin' I recommend

Everybody know me here
We're just like family
We'll fuss and fight and then make up
And have a round on me

Cat 0' 9 Tails

Well you're a two timing, fast talking son of a gun
I should have known it right from the start
You're a low down, side winding snake in the grass
Just a laughing as you broke my heart
You're a beady eyed, free riding wolf in sheeps clothing
And I'll tell you what I'm gonna do
This hell raising, hot tempered cat 0' 9 tails is gonna beat the hell out of you

You said you loved me and I believed in you
Gave my heart to you like you knew I'd do
You traveled down this road many times before
A string of broken hearts, I guess I'm just one more

A real smooth talker, you know just what to say
Silver tongue devil with tom catting ways
This time you bit off more than you can chew
There won't be nothing left when I get through with you

Daddy's Dead

Daddy's too mean to be dead
Though he lays in his new coffin bed
He's cold and he's hard it is true
But that's the way he was his whole life through
He looks like he's taking a snooze
All dressed up without any shoes
As we remember the life that he led
Daddy's just drunk not dead

Mama died five years ago
She just couldn't take any more
She's up in heaven far from you
If you go there what will mama do
As they put that old coffin lid down
And they bury you in the cold ground
We'll finally believe the words they said
Our daddy's dead

Pick Up The Pieces

We'll I'm gonna pick up the pieces of this old broken heart
I'm gonna put it back together like it was at the start
When I get it back together they'll be no sign of you
And as far as I can tell this old hearts gonna be as good as new

You ran around all over town
You didn't care how much you put me down
You left me crying more than a time or two
We'll I've had enough I can't take no more
I've packed my bags I'm walking out the door
And there's only one thing that I want to say to you

I told you once I told you twice
You better stop your lying and treat me right
But you ain't heard a single word I say
So it's so long Joe I'm out of here
I ain't gonna shed another tear
And I ain't gonna stay with you another day

The Highway is my Home

As I travel down this winding road
The changes they will come and go
All I know, the highway is my home
I gave up everything I own
I left it all I had to go
The highway is my home
Don't try to tie me down it just won't do
I'm just a rolling stone that is true
Seasons come and seasons go
But I must travel down this road
The highway is my home
I stayed at home for twenty years
I paid my dues I shed my tears
The highway is my home
I'll sing my songs for you a while
And leave you with a heartfelt smile
The highway is my home
I'll love you and I'll give but what I can
But I hear the highway calling out my name
And come the break of day
I'll have to go away

The highway is my home

I WISH I WAS A BIRD

I WISH I WAS A BIRD UP IN THE SKY
I'D FLY AROUND ALL OVER TOWN AND LOOK AT THINGS UP HIGH
AND IF I WAS A BIRD I'D BE LIKE YOU
AND I WOULD DO ALL THE THINGS THAT OTHER BIRDS MIGHT DO
I COULD FLY FOR MILES AND MILES ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE
SAILING THROUGH THE OPEN SPACE TO THE OTHER SIDE
NOW I AM NOT A BIRD I KNOW
BUT I STILL WISH THAT IT WAS SO
IF I WAS A BIRD I'D FLY AWAY
I'D LEAVE MY TROUBLES FAR BEHIND ëTIL ANOTHER DAY
THERE'D BE SO MANY THINGS THAT I COULD SEE
I'D FLY OFF IN THE AIR THE BIRDS AND ME
I'D SPREAD MY WINGS AND RIDE THE WIND ACROSS THE SKIES OF BLUE
I'LL CLOSE MY EYES AND MAKE A WISH
MAYBE IT WILL COME TRUE
NOW I AM NOT A BIRD I KNOW

BUT I STILL WISH THAT IS WAS SO

Paper Dolly

I found me a little paper dolly
One that I can call my very own
And I played with that little paper dolly
Till it was all worn out and gone

Now I'm all alone cause I don't have another
And I'd like to tell you if I had my way
I'd buy me a brand new paper dolly and to my paper dolly
I would say

Will you be my buddy?
Will you be my pal?
Will you be the best friend that I could ever have?
I need someone that I can talk to
Paper dolly is that someone you?

I'm saving up all of my pennies
And it won't be long till I will have enough
To buy me a brand new paper dolly
And this time I won't play with it so much
Cause who knows when I will get another
And money's hard to come by this I know
I'll treat her with tender loving-kindness
And I'd like to tell my paper dolly so

Give Me One Kiss

Give me one kiss before you leave me
Just one more for old time sake
This goodbye had been a long time coming
But it still makes my poor heart break

We stayed together through thick and thin
We had to make it work back then
To raise up our family that we loved so
Now the kids are up and grown
They're all living on their own
We knew this time would come so long ago

So let's remember good times that we've had
We did our best to make it last
But now it seems the time has come for moving on
There's just one thing I'd like to say
Before we turn and walk away
These memories will last our whole life long
